About the Club

MC WindingConwy Camera Club is the oldest photographic society in North Wales, established in 1945 to cover the whole of the region. As cameras subsequently became cheaper and more widely used, other societies were set up, leaving Conwy Camera Club to cover the central part of North Wales.

In the 1990s the club`s membership declined but an influx of new members since the 1999-2000 season has seen membership rise nearly six times over. We are now the largest photographic society in North Wales.

Many of the new members were inspired to join after viewing the club`s work in its shop window gallery at the top of High Street, Conwy. Our print exhibition there is changed every month (see the Now Showing section of this website for details).

The club`s emphasis is on fun! It has a friendly and social atmosphere, with photography regarded as a shared interest rather than a matter for studious concentration! As the recent influx of members has included many who are fairly new to photography, many of the club`s activities are aimed at helping members to improve their work, explore new branches of photography and understand techniques like composition and exposure. At the same time there is plenty for our more experienced members to enjoy, including lectures on digital imaging and talks by expert photographers.

The club has its own computer and projector to enable members to bring in work on CD (or other digital storage) and show it to members on the large screen. We can also demonstrate digital imaging techniques. Many club members have used the equipment to combine audio-visual shows, setting photos to music. These have been shown to numerous local societies and at the Conwy Festival of Photography, held by the club each September.

The club has also invested in a set of studio lights to enable members to learn the techniques of portraiture and tabletop work.

At the start of each season, members who wish to do so form into project groups. They choose a theme to work on over the season, and in spring each group presents its work to the club. Usually these are presented as digital audio-visual shows, but other methods such as a slide sequence or a panel of prints have been shown too.

We hold six internal competitions each year, judged by an external photographer (usually a member of another camera club). Members learn a lot from the judges’ comments on their own work and the other images entered. During the season members are also invited to submit work to folios which are passed around a few club members for their constructive comments. This can be a good starting point for members who are relatively new to photography and are not too sure (yet) about entering club competitions!

We also enter work in external competitions with other clubs in the area.

The club meets every Tuesday evening at St Michael’s Church Hall, Rosemary Lane, Conwy (postcode: LL32 8HY), starting at 7.15pm for 7.30pm. The season runs from September to May.

Our programme covers a wide variety of topics including slide shows, practical sessions and members` evenings where members get to show their own work if they wish. The club`s philosophy is that it`s not your equipment that counts but the way you use it. By looking at other people`s pictures, members receive inspiration and understand how to improve their own photography.

Each year the club organises the Conwy Festival of Photography, a one-day event that includes a print exhibition, competitions, slide shows and a sale of pictures.

During the summer there are always some club outings to places or events that inspire photography. See our Recent Events page on this website for results from summer trips and other club activities.

The club also has an expanding archive of members’ work from the 1930s to the present. See our Archive gallery on this website for images. We hope you enjoy our website! If you would like more information, please contact us by email at conwycameraclub hotmail.co.uk (Please insert @ in the middle!)
