Conwy by moonlight

On the evening of 27 March  2010, a power cut affected the entire old town of Conwy. As luck would have it, there was also a nearly full moon, albeit partially obscured by cloud. It was a rare opportunity to photograph the castle and quay by moonlight, without “light pollution” from street and building lights. A few minutes after this shot was taken, the castle floodlights came back on.

Snow doesn’t often lie on the ground near at the shore in Conwy. This picture was taken at Parc Pensarn, just south of Conwy Castle, in February 2010.

Conwy Castle at Dusk

Taken from Conwy Bridge, I looked towards Conwy  to see birds circling the towers with a dramatic sky creating an atmospheric backdrop to the castle. By shooting into the light, the sky is perfectly exposed, while the castle is thrown into dark shadow.  This produces a silhouette effect, which emphasizes its distinctive profile.  I waited for the people to get to the top of the tower to add an element of human interest.  The birds were copied from another shot and placed into position.
